Favre to compete for his old job with Packers
According to ESPN.com Brett Favre will be reinstated on Monday with the Green Bay Packers.
After speculation on Saturday that Favre will turn down the $25 million
retirement buyout, it seems GM Ted Thompson has had a change of heart.
With the ever growing possibility of Favre playing for the rival
Minnesota Vikings, the rumor that Favre will not accept the
"retirement" money, and the announcement by the commissioner it would
seem that Brett Favre got his wish.
Favre's reinstatement was announced today by NFL commissioner Roger
Goodell. According to ESPN.com, "sources told ESPN's Wendy Nix that
coach Mike McCarthy will announce he's holding an open competition for
the starting quarterback position."
If you thought there was a media circus now surrounding the Brett Favre
possible return to the NFL, wait until he gets into camp.
Packers' team president Mark Murphy said in a statement, "Brett will be
in camp tomorrow. Although there has been uncertainty regarding Brett's
return, Ted Thompson and Coach McCarthy had previously discussed this
and have had a plan in place, Coach McCarthy will talk to the team and
the quarterbacks about the plan moving forward, and after he has done
that we will share it publicly."
It just seems fundamentally flawed that one of the greatest QB's to
ever play the game, an NFL living legend, and a man coming off of what
many referred to as his finest season ever would have to compete for
his old job back.
However, that's life....those are the decisions we make. Either way
he's still going to make $12 million playing or holding a clipboard in
the span of 4 months.
Well, life could be worse for him........he could be Aaron Rodgers.
