Jaworski's analysis of the next Peyton Manning
If for some reason you TV went out during last night's Monday Night
Football game, Steelers and Ravens, and you were left with only sound
from the game, you would have three thoughts:
1. Why don't they find a way to get Michael Wilbon in the booth to exercise some of that PTI chemistry?
2. How am I getting sound from my TV and not the picture?
3. Is Joe Flacco the next Peyton Manning?
Most of us realize that Ron Jaworski was an NFL quarterback, most
notably for the Philadelphia Eagles. He was a pretty successful QB in
the NFL for 17 years. Now he is in his post-retirement stage of his
life. The stage where many ex-NFL'ers go to stay in front of the fans,
in front of the camera.
Jaworski's new gig has put him in the Monday Night Football booth
sitting next to Mike Tirico and Tony Kornheiser as the token
NFL-'experienced' analyst on ESPN.
Being an ex-QB Jaworski or "Jaws" is inevitably going to have a
'QB-bias'. It makes the most sense, he knows the most about that
position, we get it. What I found most comical was the unwavering,
unquestionable, blinding love for the Ravens QB, or according to Jaws
analysis, the next Peyton Manning: Joe Flacco.
Top 5 favorite moments from last night's game:
1. Kornheiser asking 'Jaws' for a first half grade of Flacco. 'Jaws' without even taking breath and with his best 'Gus Johnson', answered with a resounding: "A".
2. Flacco's stats on the night: 16/31 for 162 yards and 1 TD.
3. 'Jaws' commenting on Flacco's unheralded ability in which he
"squeezed the ball in a tight window" on a short pass in the 4th
quarter. There were no defenders within 15 yards of the receiver.
4. 'Jaws' stating that if Flacco could play at Delaware, "he can play anywhere".
5. Kornheiser pointing out that Jaws' son also attends Delaware, the same college Flacco went to.
There is no doubt that Jaworski has a deep emotional attachment to the
quarterback position. Granted, Flacco is a rookie who played well under
the bright lights of MNF, but that doesn't make him the next Joe
Montana.
He barely completed 50% of his passes. He threw 1 touchdown and lost the game.
In the end Jaw's came across last night less like a objective media
professional but more like a loving father on ritalin at his kid's high
school game......kind of excessive but yet still entertaining.
