Texans rookie Cushing coming after NFLDRAFTBIBLE.COM
By: SCUBA
In Texans rookie LB Brian Cushing's exact words he will "take action toward" NFLDRAFTBIBLE.COM. This according to an interview with ESPN 1530 in Austin, TX.
It seems that there were allegations from the website stating that a number of college players entering the 2009 NFL draft had tested positive for steroids and some players for marijuana. Some notable players drafted in the allegations from the website were:
- Percy Harvin (WR)- marijuana (Vikings 1st round pick)
- B.J. Raji (DT) - marijuana (Packers 1st round pick)
- Vontae Davis (CB) - marijuana (Dolphins 1st round pick)
- Brian Cushing (LB) - steriods (Texans 1st round pick)
What has put NFLDRAFTBIBLE.com into hot-water is the fact that Cushing did not test positive for steroids. In fact, Cushing's agent, Tom Condon has stated according to Profootballtalk.com:
“There is no truth to the vicious and false rumor regarding Brian Cushing’s drug test at the Combine...Brian, in fact, has been informed by league representatives that his test result was negative for any banned substances. Furthermore, neither the League office nor Brian’s representatives have been contacted regarding a positive test.”
Although, Nfldraftbible.com has since retracted its report and apologized that does not seem to be good enough for Brian Cushing. This, again according to Profootballtalk.com:
“I’m pretty tired of everything happening with all these supposed rumors [and] people trying to tarnish my reputation,” Cushing said. “I’m not sure what happened. I’m don’t know if it’s my playing attitude [or] people just don’t like how I handle myself. But you know that’s too bad for them.”
Can you say - lawsuit?
Personally, I don't think that an apology is good enough either. This report has done irreparable damage to these players character in the minds of the public and the media.
Even with the players that did officially test positive, there will always be a team that will take a chance on a player coming out of college, heavy on talent (uhhh hmmm Raiders). As noted, earlier, all of these players listed here were still drafted in the first round. Players are still going to make their millions but it does not have to come at the price of a libeled report.
The moral of the story is that websites and even blogs like this one still need to be extremely careful with what they report on players. Even though you might be writing an article with the intention of just entertaining a few people, we must always consider who might be reading.
