NFL Free Agency: Let The Over Spending Begin
Today marks the first day of the NFL bonanza known better as NFL Free Agency.  Many players will find new homes today and some will be left with an uncertain future.  However, the one thing that is certain is that with an inevitable uncapped year in 2010 on the horizon, teams will have to open-the-flood-gates to the team bank account for this year's free agents.

Players that you might see sign hefty contracts today include; DE Julius Peppers, RB Thomas Jones, LB Karlos Dansby, CB Antrel Rolle.

One player who I really didn't see getting signed immediately was WR Nate Burleson.  Not only did he get signed immediately, but he received an enormous contract.

The Detroit Lions signed wide receiver Nate Burleson to a 5-year $25 million contract with $11 million guaranteed.

In seven years in the NFL, Nate Burleson has had one 1,000 yard season.

That's a big contract for a number two receiver, who will be 29-years old heading into the 2010 season, and who had his best season last in the NFL six years ago.  Then again, it's the Lions and he won't be the only player getting an undeserving contract in this year's free agent spending bonanza.

I am shocked at that deal. I really didn't think many teams would go over board with contracts despite the uncapped year. They need to be careful because it may hurt them once the new bargaining agreement is settled. I was expecting to see a couple big money over the top deals but overall I didnt think it would be as crazy as most people think.
